Why?
RD 339/2021 requires at least one approved lifejacket for every person aboard, plus jackets suited to children's weight and size. In zone 1 one extra is carried. The minimum buoyancy depends on the zone: 275 newtons in zone 1, 150 in zones 2 to 4 and 100 in zones 5 to 7. Wearing one at all times is compulsory only on personal watercraft, where it applies to the driver and passengers alike; on other boats the rule is to carry them aboard, and it is the skipper who decides when they must be put on.

Why?
Lifejackets must be fitted with a light, except on boats navigating only by day in zones 4, 5, 6 or 7 (those closest to shore). For night navigation or farther zones, the light is mandatory.

Why?
The lower the number, the farther offshore: zone 1 is unlimited navigation and zone 7 is protected waters (harbours, rías, sheltered bays). The farther from shore, the more mandatory safety equipment.

Why?
The PER allows navigation in the zone between the coast and a line drawn parallel to it 12 miles out, which is exactly the definition of navigation zone 4 in RD 339/2021. The two rules fit together: the licence sets how far the skipper may go, and the safety equipment is required according to the zone being navigated. Once the navigation practicals are completed, the attribution can be extended to command of motor vessels up to 24 metres in length for navigation between mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, including the islands in between.

Why?
Liferafts are generally mandatory in zones 1, 2 and 3 (the farthest), with capacity for all authorised persons. They must be approved by the DGMM and serviced periodically at authorised stations.

Why?
The farther offshore you navigate — that is, the lower the zone number — the more safety equipment is required. This is not an abstract principle: liferafts are compulsory only in zones 1, 2 and 3; the lifejacket's minimum buoyancy rises from 100 newtons in zones 5 to 7 to 150 in zones 2 to 4 and 275 in zone 1; and the distress-signal outfit runs from none in zone 7 to six hand flares, six parachute rockets and two smoke signals in zone 1. Zone 7, sheltered waters, has the fewest requirements, but it does not exempt you from the essential equipment.

Why?
Pyrotechnic signals expire; carrying expired ones is equivalent to not carrying them and can be an offence. Stow them in a dry, accessible place, and hand expired ones in for disposal rather than firing them as a test.

- Roja Correct answer
- Verde
- Blanca
- Azul
Why?
Distress hand flares and parachute rockets are red: they signal danger and a request for help. Distress smoke signals, by contrast, are orange. One nuance is worth spelling out: what is reserved for distress is the red pyrotechnic light, not the colour red in general — in navigation lights red marks the port side and, as two all-round lights in a vertical line, a vessel not under command. A red flare or rocket, on the other hand, never means anything but distress, which is why they must never be fired as a test.

Why?
First: raise the alarm, immediately throw a lifebuoy for flotation and a reference point, and assign someone to point at and never lose sight of the person. Then manoeuvre to return and, if you have GPS, mark the position (MOB).

Why?
Preventing man-overboard relies on a safety harness clipped to a jackstay (lifeline), which keeps the crew attached to the boat. At night or in bad weather it is especially advisable, together with good lighting.

Why?
To 'heave to / ride out' (capear) is to hold against the storm with the bow or bow-quarter to the sea, using just enough engine to keep steerage and reduce pounding. The opposite is 'running' (correr): going with the storm, taking the sea on the stern or quarter.

Why?
A lee shore is one toward which the wind blows: it pushes the boat onto it, risking grounding or being driven onto rocks. It is wise to move away and gain sea room (to windward) in good time.

Why?
With a leak: find where the water enters, plug it with the means available, and pump out (plus manual bailing) to control the level. If it cannot be controlled, raise the alarm and prepare to abandon. Never open the seacocks.

Why?
After grounding: check for leaks and the hull's condition before moving the boat, and assess the tide (a rising tide may refloat it on its own). Forcing the engine without checking can worsen the damage. If at risk, call for help.

Why?
In fog: slow to a safe speed, switch on navigation lights, sound the prescribed fog signals, and keep the radar reflector up to be detected. Maximise lookout by sight and hearing and, if available, use radar.

- MAYDAY Correct answer
- PAN-PAN
- SECURITÉ
- ROGER
Why?
'MAYDAY' (spoken three times) is the radio distress signal: grave and imminent danger to life or vessel. 'PAN-PAN' indicates urgency without immediate danger to life, and 'SECURITÉ' a safety message (e.g. weather or navigation warning).

Why?
RD 339/2021 does not leave the number of extinguishers to the skipper's judgement: it sets it according to length and installed engine power. By length, and as a general rule, one extinguisher of 34B rating is required on boats under 10 metres that have an enclosed living space and on those from 10 to under 15 metres; two from 15 to under 20 metres; and three from 20 to 24 metres. Each extinguisher must contain at least 2 kilograms of extinguishing agent, or an equivalent quantity. Placement is regulated too: in easily accessible places, with at least one positioned so that it can be reached without difficulty from the main steering position.
