UT2 — Mooring and anchoring

Exam questions: Mooring and anchoring

12 questions with the answer, the explanation and the official rule behind it. Part of the PER and PNB syllabus.

  1. 1
    Anchor

    Why?

In normal conditions you veer 3 to 4 times the depth of the spot; in bad weather or strong current, 5 times or more. The more rode you veer, the more horizontal the pull on the anchor becomes, and it is precisely that horizontal pull that makes the flukes bite into the bottom instead of lifting the anchor. Two useful qualifications when applying the rule: it is written for chain, whose own weight forms the catenary that keeps the pull low, so with rope or a mixed rode you must veer considerably more to achieve the same effect; and the depth to count is the one there will be at high water, not the one the sounder shows when you drop.

  2. 2

    Why?

To drag (garrear) is when the anchor loses its grip and drags along the bottom, so the boat drifts. It is corrected by veering more chain, changing anchorage, dropping a second anchor or holding with the engine ahead.

  3. 3

    Why?

The swinging circle is the path the boat follows as it turns freely around the anchor (riding to a single anchor) under wind or current. You must check that there are no rocks or other anchored boats within that circle.

  4. 4

    «Entalingar» significa:

    Why?

To bend on (entalingar) is to secure the end of the chain or rope to the anchor's ring (arganeo), normally with a reinforced shackle; the joint so made is the entalingadura. It should not be confused with the other end of the rode, the one inside the chain locker: that end is made fast to the boat, and it is best done in a way that can be released or cut, in case the whole rode ever has to be let go quickly.

  5. 5

    • Molinete (o cabrestante) Correct answer
    • Barbotén suelto
    • Orinque
    • Noray

    Why?

The windlass is the machine for weighing anchor; with a horizontal axis it is a windlass, with a vertical axis a capstan. The gypsy (barbotén) is the toothed wheel that meshes with the chain links.

  6. 6

    Why?

Approach slowly, bow to the wind or current (whichever dominates), until the boat stops over the chosen spot; then drop the anchor and pay out chain as the boat falls back. This way the line lies stretched out and does not pile up.

  7. 7

    Why?

The bowline forms a fixed loop that neither slips nor tightens, and unties easily even after being loaded. It is one of the most useful knots aboard (making fast, passing a line's end, rescues).

  8. 8

    Why?

The clove hitch is used to make a line fast to a post, ring or spar; it is quick to tie and untie, though it should be backed up if it must take varying loads. To join two lines you use other knots (sheet bend, reef knot…).

  9. 9

    Why?

Ashore, lines are made fast to a bollard, bitt or ring on the quay; aboard, to bitts or cleats. A full mooring uses three kinds of line, each with its own job: the head and stern lines, which run forward and aft and hold the boat along the quay; the breast lines, which work at right angles to the quay and keep the boat alongside; and the springs, which work fore-and-aft and stop the boat running ahead or astern along the berth.

  10. 10

    Why?

The spring is a line that works fore-and-aft and prevents the boat from moving ahead or astern along the quay. It is also very useful to spring off against when leaving the berth.

  11. 11

    Why?

The trip line (orinque) is a line made fast to the crown of the anchor with a small buoy at the other end; it marks where the anchor is and helps free it if it fouls on rock. Its length should be a little more than the depth at high water.

    Source Temario: RD 875/2014, anexo II, UT2 «Elementos de amarre y fondeo» (BOE-A-2014-10344)

  12. 12

Una embarcación fondeada, respecto a una amarrada a muelle, requiere:

    • Mantener vigilancia visual y auditiva, tomando referencias de tierra (enfilaciones/marcaciones) Correct answer
    • Ninguna vigilancia, pues el ancla nunca falla
    • Apagar todas las luces durante la noche
    • Levar el ancla cada hora

    Why?

An anchored boat is not watched like a moored one: keep a watch and take shore references (transits or bearings), or use the GPS anchor alarm to detect dragging in time. At night it must show the prescribed anchor light.
