UT8 — Emergencies at sea

Exam questions: Emergencies at sea

11 questions with the answer, the explanation and the official rule behind it. Part of the PER syllabus.

  1. 1

    Why?

The rudder is put over toward the side the person fell: this swings the stern (and the propeller with it) away from them, preventing injury. At the same time you raise the alarm, throw a lifebuoy with light, and note position and time.

  2. 2

    Why?

VHF channel 16 (156.8 MHz) is the international distress, urgency, safety and calling channel. MAYDAY, PAN PAN and SÉCURITÉ calls are made on it by voice and first contact is established there, after which traffic moves to a working channel so as to leave it clear. It must not be confused with channel 70 (156.525 MHz), the digital selective calling (DSC) channel: 70 is not used for speech but for the set itself to transmit the alert automatically with the boat's MMSI identity and, if a GPS is connected, its position too.

    Why?

If the situation is urgent but there is no grave and imminent danger to life, the correct call is PAN PAN, stating the nature of the emergency, the position and the time. A practical caution is worth adding: in a real man-overboard that condition is seldom met. Cold water, the state of the sea and how easily visual contact is lost mean most cases are treated from the outset as grave and imminent danger, and then the correct call is MAYDAY. When in doubt, transmit MAYDAY: it is always easier to downgrade the alert afterwards than to make up the time lost by under-calling.

  4. 4

    Why?

Salvamento Marítimo coordinates search and rescue in Spanish waters through its coordination centres. You can alert it via VHF channel 16 or the 112 emergency phone, giving position, nature of the emergency and persons aboard.

  5. 5

    Why?

The towline is made fast to a genuinely strong point (not to stanchions), taken up without sharp snatches (some elasticity helps) and you proceed at reduced speed, watching the course and the towed boat's behaviour. Agree signals between the two boats.

  6. 6

    Why?

If steering fails, use the emergency tiller (if fitted), a jury rudder (oar, board, lines streamed astern) or steer by playing the engine(s). Reduce speed, consider calling for help and head for safe water.

  7. 7

    Why?

Fire needs fuel, an oxidiser (oxygen) and heat. To put it out you remove one of them: smothering (cutting off oxygen), cooling (removing heat) or cutting the fuel supply. Hence you shut fuel valves and use the extinguisher suited to each fire type.

  8. 8

    Why?

In an electrical fire you first cut the power and use a suitable extinguisher (not water, which conducts electricity). Removing the voltage eliminates the ignition source and reduces the risk of electrocution.

  9. 9

    Why?

As long as the boat floats and is safer than the liferaft, you do not abandon it: the classic rule is to 'step up' into the raft only when the boat is sinking, never to 'step down' into it prematurely. The boat is more visible and habitable than a raft.

  10. 10

    Why?

After a collision there is a duty to assist: help the people and the other vessel whenever it can be done without grave danger to one's own, identify oneself and alert Salvamento Marítimo if there are injuries or risk. Then check for leaks and damage.

    Source Temario: RD 875/2014, anexo II, UT8 «Emergencias en la mar» (BOE-A-2014-10344)

  11. 11

    Why?

If the leak exceeds the capacity to pump and plug, alert as early as possible on channel 16 giving position and emergency details, keep bailing, and prepare the raft and lifejackets in case you must abandon. Calling early makes rescue easier.
