- A babor Correct answer
- A estribor
- No se mueve
- Hacia proa
Why?
With a right-handed propeller, going astern the stern walks to port (and the bow to starboard) due to the blades' lateral thrust. Going ahead the opposite happens: the stern walks to starboard. This is the propeller's transverse effect, independent of the rudder.

Why?
In a turn, the stern is the part that moves most (it swings to the side opposite the bow's swing). That is why, when manoeuvring near a quay or another boat, you must watch the stern especially to avoid hitting it.

- Remolcar a otra embarcación
Why?
The standing turn (ciaboga) is the manoeuvre of turning the boat almost within its own length, alternating ahead and astern with the rudder hard over each way, also using the propeller effect. It is useful for turning in tight spaces (basins).

Why?
Approach with the bow into the wind or current (whichever affects most), because the boat steers better and stops in a controlled way on reaching the buoy. Approaching with wind or current astern makes it hard to stop.

Why?
By powering against a spring left made fast, you can swing the bow or stern off the quay in a controlled way before letting go the last line. You must allow for the wind, current and propeller effect.

Why?
Without way on, the wind drives the boat to leeward; the topsides act like a sail. Allow for this when manoeuvring in tight spaces or approaching a quay or buoy, leaving room to leeward.

Why?
Enter at minimum steerage speed (just enough to steer), with lines and fenders ready and the crew briefed on their tasks. Going slowly gives time to correct and limits damage if something goes wrong.

Why?
Going ahead, the pivot point lies toward the bow (about one third of the length from the bow), so the stern sweeps widely to the opposite side. Going astern, the pivot point shifts toward the stern and it is the bow that moves most.

Why?
The rudder steers when water flows past its blade: with way on (ahead or astern) or from the propeller's discharge current. With the boat stopped and no water flow, the rudder has no effect; that is why a touch of engine is sometimes given to 'gain steerage'.
